Guitarras Braceras

My guitar is unmasked,
It's a wetback, illegal and rebellious.
You cried as you watched me depart
It was ten years ago, in September.
Your strings opened up my wound.
So much work I collapsed.
To my children I cry, remember me,
Lift me up, guitars of the workers.
Guitar that crossed borders
Across the Rio Bravo and the Suchiate,
longing for the taste of metate.
My mother died without my embrace.
Guitar that awaits my return,
Atahualpa has told you his sorrows.
Guitars that have endured pandemics,
dictatorships, looting, progress.
My guitar knows pain.
She knows that I had to leave.
Poverty pushed me to go.
My guitar knows pain.
Guitar that crossed borders,
Across the Rio Bravo and the Suchiate,
Longing for the taste of metate.
My mother died without my embrace.
Guitar that awaits my return,
Atahualpa has told you his sorrows,
Guitars that have endured pandemics,
Dictatorships, looting, progress.

Mi guitarra no usa crubebocas
Es mojada, ilegal y rebelde,
Me lloraste viendo mi partida
Fue hace diez años, era septiembre.
Despertaban tus cuerdas mi herida
Después de la labor derrumbarme,
A mis hijos llorar, acordarme,
Levántenme guitarras braceras.
Guitarra que cruzaste fronteras
Por Rio Bravo y por el Suchiate,
Añorando el sabor a metate
Mi viejita murió sin mi abrazo.
Guitarra que espera mi regreso
Atahualpa te ha dicho sus penas,
Guitarras que aguantaron pandemias,
Dictaduras, saqueos, progreso.
Mi guitarra conoce el dolor
Ella sabe que tuve que irme,
La pobreza me hizo salirme,
Mi guitarra conoce el dolor.
Guitarra que cruzaste fronteras
Por Rio Bravo y por el Suchiate,
Añorando el sabor a metate
Mi viejita murió sin mi abrazo.
Guitarra que espera mi regreso
Atahualpa te ha dicho sus penas,
Guitarras que aguantaron pandemias,
Dictaduras, saqueos, progreso.

SOMOS MIGRANTES SEÑOR
sir, we are migrants
Dreaming of working, without forgetting where we came from
Looking for a better life , we came to this country,
The poorest worker has to work the hardest
We have no rights, sir, we are migrants
We live in a trailer, we barely make rent
Even before the pandemic, every day was a struggle
So few of us have work now, so many of us go hungry
The government and the law offer us no protection
My husband is very sick, he’s weak and can’twalk
Cancer got him, it has ruined all his dreams ,
He has no insurance, I don’t sleep, I lose hope
He who has good money, gets good medical care.
Jobs were already hard to find, now with COVID there are none
They’ve fired nearly everyone, , my dreams are shattered
My daughter is very sad, seeing how we struggle
She’s dying to help, looking for a job herself
We want to work, to change our situation
We are not what they yell at us, nor are we an inferior race
The government that ignores us is blind to how hard we work
The wealth they reap we sowed with our own shoulders
People I’ve never met have shared their bread with me
Other brothers share provisions, money, and sal
Long live our siblings from DIGNIDAD INMIGRANTE
From here in Athens, Georgia, always helping peopl
SOMOS MIGRANTES SEÑOR
Soñando con trabajar, sin olvidar la raíz
buscando vivir mejor llegamos a éste país,

It was so very hard to make up my mind
Today I am leaving you, but I promise to return
I only ask that you wait for me, by god
I need to seek out a life north of here
I want to bring you with me, just give me time
I’m seeking the warmth and protection I do not have for you today
I only hope that my strength is enough
To get me across that river of deception
I’m going north, far from here
Leaving my fingerprints on your skin
I’m going north, following the sun
Leaving the rain behind, walking toward love
It’s taken me so long to put down roots
You left me. I promised you I’d come back.
Now I ask only that my children don’t suffer
Like I did, so far away from you.
Today you are with me, in the memories of your warmth
I’m seeking the warmth and protection I don’t have for you today
I only hope my strength is enough to carry me
Across that border, to disappointment
Here in the north, I’m still far way
Leaving my footprints far behind
Going north, following the sun
Leaving the rain behind, walking toward love
Me dejaste, yo te prometí volver,

(Your games and my sorrows)
Your voice takes me home
My little chilpayate
Your games and your sorrows
Covered in chocolate
I sent money for food
Just a few pesos from afar
I will return one day
I send hugs and kisses
The American Dream
Has become a nightmare
Don’t come to this land
They humiliate us here.
Now I’m unemployed
And there’s so little food
I’m sick in bed
With no medicine
The virus inflicts evil
Just like the president
Two vicious beasts
That oppress the people
With its claws in my neck
It bites my head
Takes my breath away
It burns me like a weed
We are here just a short while
Migrants in this world
And when we go, we take nothing with us
To that eternal sleep
Your eyes light my way
I hope to see you soon
Your laughter returns life to me
I’m living only to hold you again
Child’s voice:
Papá Daniel you went away
To a far-off land
Come back to see me soon
Even if you bring nothing with you
Tus juegos y mis penas
Tu voz me lleva a casa
Pequeño chilpayate
Tus juegos y tus penas
Mezclada en chocolate,
Mande pa la comida
De lejos unos pesos
Regresare algún día
Te mando muchos besos.
El sueño americano
Se ha vuelto pesadilla
No vengas a ésta tierra
Aquí se nos humilla.
Hoy vivo desempleado
Y poca es la comida
En cama estoy tirado
No tengo medicina
El virus causa males
Igual que el presidente
Dos fieros animales
Que oprimen a la gente.
Con garras en el cuello
Me muerde la cabeza
Se lleva mi resuello
Me quema cuál maleza.
Venimos de pasada
Migramos a éste mundo
Y no llevamos nada
Al sueño más profundo.
Tus ojos me iluminan
Deseo pronto verte
Tus risas me reaniman
Vivir para abrazarte.
Voz de niño:
Papá Daniel te fuiste
A tierras muy lejanas
Regresa pronto a verme
Aunque no traigas nada,

STOLEN
STOLEN
From her country she arrived sixteen years ago
Parting ways with her husband six more years ago
So began her labor
For those whose fortunes are stolen, stolen, stolen
She prepared in their kitchens the meals from where she’d come
They plundered her hours, her wages, her memories of the sun
Now comes this wave of death
Filling the net of those who have stolen, stolen, stolen
Ten months ago, her partner became a deportee
As long as our comrades are threatened, none of us are free
Power is not given but taken
United, we take back what was stolen, stolen, stolen

Like the River
I come from El Salvador, near San Miguel
Tiny town on the panamericána
I was three when Papá marched off to the monte
I watched my mother cook supper
M16 on her back.
At 14 the pandillas came for my brother
Just a girl, Mamá knew they’d soon claim me too
She cried when I boarded that bus for the desert
The river rose like a ghost
Thought it’d swallow me whole
Sometimes I don’t know the next right thing to do
This life that I’m leaving is all I’ve got to lose
Met a man up here, said he’d always protect me
His talk was smooth but his hands were far too rough
Then one morning he beat me right there in the front yard
All the neighbors looked on
By next day I was gone
(‘Cause I still know how to run)
Got a job working nights at the pollería.
That way I can be home while the baby’s awake.
Now so many are sick, and they’re cutting our hours
But I’m not afraid of being poor.
I’ve been there before
Sometimes I don’t know the next right thing to do
This life that I’m leaving is all I’ve got to lose
The choices don’t get any easier,
Oh but they sure do get clearer
With time
And like the river I rise
Like the river I rise

HOMELAND
I follow a glowing land
that moves the oceans
Home is in places where loved ones fight
The water is rising
The kings cast their net to the flood
I reach for the land that pulls me to sky
The moon is a homeland
How many more will be lured
By dreams corrupted
Trapped in pyramids
Ruled by those on the summit
The fire on the mountain
Was lit by the sons of kings
Feeding on strangers who came
Like moths to the flame
The moon is a homeland
Their castles, their banks, their prisons
Their flags and their borders
The lines that condemn the traveler to die
They blur in the moonlight
They’re drowned by the tide
I bless the land that follows me everywhere
The moon is a homeland
--Lydian (they/them)

Mangos and Fire
I remember mountains like the end of the world
The taste of mango and lime on my tongue
Mama in the kitchen. She always smelled like fire
We were poor but I didn’t know
We were poor but I didn’t know
I was barely turned nine that summer
Asking for answers I was too young to know
I was holdin mama’s hand, walkin across the desert
And the mountains were watching us go
And the mountains were watching us go
And all that I know, I try to forget
Or at least not to speak it out loud
When I close my eyes, I taste mangos and fire
Feel those mountains takin me down
Feel those mountains takin me down
Well the rains here are straight out of the Bible
I live on a street full of people I don’t know
15 years have come and gone, rolled past us like a river
Got a husband and a girl of my own
Got a husband and a girl of my own
And I swear that I never will get used to
My daughter speaking in a language I don’t know
I can feel my mama’s voice rising in my mouth
But the words got nowhere to go
Yeah the words have got nowhere to go
And all that I know, I try to forget
Or at least not to speak it out loud
When I close my eyes, I taste mangos and fire
Feel those mountains takin me down (taking me taking me down)
Feel those mountains takin me down (taking me taking me down)
And the mountains are taking me down, taking me down
Mangos y fuego

Juan is a worker
He works all day long
The boss takes his money
And his joy
Siiii (or, yeah!)
Maria cries
Cooped up in her house all the time
Her hunger grows
As the food runs out
How long, how long, my people
How long until people wake up
How long, how long, my people
when will the worker stop being ashamed
They fired Juan
Just for getting sick
COVID wasn’t what he had
But it was a good enough excuse
Siiii
Farm workers
Students and teachers
Face discrimination
Just for being hispanic
How long, how long, my people
How long until people wake up
How long, how long, my people
Interlude
Even the children who have papers
Can’t get support
And the immigrant children
Are shoved in cages
when will the worker stop being ashamed
Siiii
Maria complained
When they harassed her
They knew she had no right
So they could silence her
How long, how long, my people
How long until people wake up
How long, how long, my people
when will the worker stop being ashamed
The workers’ strike has arrived
Just like the tide
People are rising up
And no one can stop them
Siiiii
The people are coming together
Marching in the streets
Fists in the air
Mirgant Dignity.
How long, how long, my people
How long until people wake up
How long, how long, my people
when will the worker stop being ashamed
COVID came to visit
I barely survived
But others have died
Juan es obrero
trabaja todo el dia
el patron le ah robado
dinero y alegria
Siiii
Maria esta llorando
Metida siempre en casa
El hambre esta engordando
Se acabo la comida
Hasta cuando hasta cuando mi gente
Hasta cuando despertara el pueblo
Hasta cuando hasta cuando mi gente
Dejaran de humillar al obrero
A Juan lo corrieron
Por que se enfermo
No tenia el covid
De pretexto les sirvio
Siiii
Obreras campesinos
Estudiantes y maestros
Son discriminados
Solo por ser hispanos
Hasta cuando hasta cuando mi gente
Hasta cuando despertara el pueblo
Hasta cuando hasta cuando mi gente
Dejaran de humillar al obrero
Inter
A niños ciudadanos
les niegan la asistencia
Y a niños inmigrantes
En jaulas los someten
Siiii
Maria se queja
De que la acosaron
No tienen derechos
Silencio lograron
Hasta cuando hasta cuando mi gente
Hasta cuando despertara el pueblo
Hasta cuando hasta cuando mi gente
Dejaran de humillar al obrero
La huelga ha llegado
Igual que los mares
El Pueblo se levante
Ya no hay quien lo pare
Siiiii
El pueblo se une
marchando en las calles
el puño levantado
dignidad inmigrante
Hasta cuando hasta cuando mi gente
Hasta cuando despertara el pueblo
Hasta cuando hasta cuando mi gente
Dejaran de humillar al obrero

It's coming
They sell us what we don't need
Robbers that don't sleep watch us
Bankers manage our dreams
Presidents that fail on the chair
Merchants govern the government
The rich truly, really, always rule
Sold for parishioners coins
And marijuana is sold on every corner
Porfirio Días walks by the palace
Watch that our sky is sold
Watch that our land is surrendered
And as the mafia strolls through our patios
We have those who betray for crumbs
Fucked politicians with money
We have a congress that doesn’t listen
And millions that don’t have a job
The court charges in advance
The police are the robbers
The TV dominates and poorly educates us
The parties obey the worst
We have a story that screams at us
It tells us what we don't need
Better to die standing and liberated
Than live eternally as slaves
The disappeared already return
They sowed the seed of the future
Forty-three walk on the tip
They are sprinkling hope throughout the world
Benita Galeana gritando consignas
Retumba la voz de Adelina Zendejas
Misael Núñez Acosta camina
Junto a Samir flores con rumbo a palacio

Soy Jornalero
Letra y Música Francisco Palacios
Soy jornalero trabajo en la plantación
De tomate, jitomate, aguacate o algodón;
